Homemade Souvenirs - Putting a Little of Yourself into Your Vacation Mementos

Most vacationers are looking for that something special to bring home as a token of their trip. Unfortunately, in many vacation destinations, the norm is streets filled with tacky souvenir shops. Filled with racks of postcards, imprinted shot glasses, baseball hats and keychains, they're fine for many. Still, others are looking to take home something a little different and, perhaps, more personal.

So this year, why not do something a little different on vacation? Make your own special souvenirs.

Making your own souvenirs can be as simple as remembering to pack your camera. Digital or 35mm is fine. Take whatever photos you find most appealing, whether it's photos of the kids at the waterpark, photos of landmarks, or compositions of landscape and wildlife. Be prepared to take a lot of photos; it's your best chance to get a few really good shots.

If you've gone digital, why not create a screensaver for your computer out of them? For great 35 mm prints, why not enlarge your favorite photo or photos, frame them, and designate a wall in your home just for vacation pictures?

Maybe photography's not your thing. So why not take a fun class while on vacation? Many vacation destinations have artistic specialties. If your destination specializes in pottery, why not take a pottery class while away? It's a relaxing way to spend part of your vacation, plus you'll have the benefit of being able to bring your own handmade souvenir home with you.

Arts and crafts with the kids is something else to consider while on vacation. There's bound to be some down-time on vacation, particularly if you're traveling with little ones. Whether it's a rainy afternoon or those hours before bedtime, arts and crafts are a great way to pass the time for both kids and adults alike.

Let your vacation destination influence what kind of arts and crafts project you choose. If you're at the shore, make sand candles or string sea shells onto necklaces. If you're camping in the woods, search for unusual leaves or pretty wildflowers to bring home and press between the pages of a book. Just be careful not to stumble onto poison ivy!

A great project for all destinations is to create a keepsake ornament. Small, clear, round plastic ornaments can be purchased in most craft stores. You can fill the ornament with all sorts of things: sand, seashells, pebbles. Tie it with a ribbon and you'll have a great remembrance of a special trip.

The idea, ultimately, is to be creative. Creating a souvenir from scratch can be a rewarding way to commemorate a special family trip. Whatever method you choose, have fun, use your imagination, and you'll be sure to bring home a wonderful souvenir from your vacation that you will have for years to come.

Boston Attractions - USS Constitution

Do you have some time to kill in Boston? If you do and you are a history buff you are in luck. Boston is home to some great historical destinations. One such place is the USS Constitution Museum. It is a great place to take in a little history and a must see for any serious history fan. Keep reading and learn about what makes this a must see destination.

The USS Constitution Museum was founded in 1972 and opened its doors to the public in 1976. It is located across the pier from the USS Constitution which still floats in the harbor. It contains over 3000 different artifacts which help to explain the rich history of the ship. It stores exhibits that were once on board the ship which has allowed the ship to return to the appearance of an active duty vessel rather than a floating museum. In addition to the artifacts you will also find interactive displays at the USS Constitution Museum such as one about the Barbary War. This display allows you to experience what the war was like for people at the time. Since it was founded the museum has been a popular attraction. Before 1997 it averaged almost 75,000 visitors per year. In 1997 it dropped the entrance fee and it now averages almost 275,000 visitors a year. It continues to expand with cooperation from the National Park Service and will remain a popular attraction for years. If you love history or naval vessels, this place is a must see.

If you would like to visit the museum you can find it in the Charleston Navy yard in Boston. You should call the museum's information line at 617-426-1812 before you go for current hours and to find out about special events that may be happening. Have fun.

Take a Break - Enjoy a Cruise

Take a break, stay away from the busy city streets, free your spirit and meet new people. There are all kinds of specialty cruises, from cruises for hiking enthusiasts that stop at many choice hiking locations, to cruises for fisher people, health enthusiasts and other special interest groups. The cruise ship offers everything that is entirely for one's enjoyment. You can take part in planned group activities, take in some sun, enjoy one of the many on board activities or just hang out in your cabin and watch movies. Enjoy the traditional way of relaxing near the pool with eyes set on the star-studded sky or flash one's eyeballs on the beautiful people. Some ships offer spa and other beauty packages. As the night curtains are dropped, there are numerous bars and parties for you socialize and mingle with others. You may be surprised at the unique types of activities that are available. There are a lot of things and activities waiting for you so do not get stuck in a corner, go out and meet people.

You are on your way away from home; packing is the next thing to consider. There will be plenty of situations perfect for casual wear, such as shorts and t-shirts. For the night time something a little formal will do the trick. Besides the basics of clothes and toiletries, it's a clever idea to bring at least a few swim suits. There's just nothing fun about putting on an icy cold suit that doesn't want to go on. If you've ever tried to squeak into a wet swimsuit, then you know what I'm talking about. Be sure to bring your camera because there will be tons of interesting things to snap pictures of. You'll want these to record your vacation for yourself as well as share with friends once you get back home from your cruise vacation. Above all else, don't forget to pack your sense of fun and adventure.
